The Power Trio of Typography: Enhancing Readability with Tracking, Kerning, and Leading
Designers pay meticulous attention to the details of each layout, and the arrangement of space can make or break the success of a composition. When working with type, it is essential to consider three primary spatial factors: tracking, kerning, and leading. Understanding the distinctions between tracking, kerning, and leading can enhance the readability and elevate the quality of layout design.
Tracking adjusts the overall space between a selection of letters.
Kerning adjusts the space between specific characters. Special attention is given to letter pairs such as LA, To, Tr, Ta, Tu, Te, Ty, Wa, WA, We, Wo, Ya, and Yo.
Leading refers to the distance between multiple baselines lines of text.
